# About the Model & Artifact Objects

Model and Artifact are standard objects. In Study Startup, Vault uses them to model the structure of key document binders and facilitate document auto-filing for those binders. The _Model_ object (`model__v`) contains a record for _Vault Clinical Docs_. Each binder that uses Study Startup auto-filing must have this model selected as its filing model. The _Artifact_ object (`hierarchy__v`) contains a record for each binder section and expected document in a Study Startup binder.

Unlike other objects, the object records for _Model_ are non-editable and completely maintained by Veeva. For the _Vault Clinical Docs_ model, the _Artifact_ records are editable.

You can use these object records in your Vault's document type configuration to map document types, subtypes, and classifications to individual artifacts. You'll perform this analysis and mapping exercise during initial implementation of Veeva Study Startup. Over time, you can revisit these mappings when adding new document types.

Vault can use these mappings to drive [auto-filing of documents into binders](/en/lr/30622/). Each binder template and each binder is associated to a specific _Model_ record using the binder's _Filing Model_ field. When associated to _Vault Clinical Docs_, you can map one artifact from that model to each section of the binder. Vault uses the combination of artifact mapping and study fields to auto-file documents into binders.
