# About the Medical-Safety Connection

Using the Medical-Safety Connection, organizations with both a Medical and a Safety Vault can exchange data. The Medical-Safety Connection transfers _Adverse Event_ data from MedInquiry to Safety, which includes _Patient_, _Reporter_, _Product_, and _Event_ information. This transfer creates an _Inbox Item_ in Safety for further _Case_ processing and reporting.

## How the Medical-Safety Connection Works

When you create a new _Adverse Event_ record in your Medical Vault and use the _Transfer to Safety_ action, an Inbox Item is created in Safety.

In addition, the _Case Narrative_ in MedInquiry is used to populate the _Narrative Preview_ field and create the _Narrative Document_ in Safety, which is linked to the Safety _Inbox Item_. Any Medical _Adverse Event_ attachments are created as individual documents in Safety with the _Case > Source > Non Re-Transmittable_ document type and are linked to the created _Inbox Item_ record. 

If field and related document importing is successful, the Safety _Inbox Item_ will be in the _New_ state. If field and related document importing is not successful, the _Inbox Item_ will be in the _Import Error_ state. If the import fails, the _Inbox Item_ remains in the initial _Active_ state. 

When the _Transfer Status_ field on an _Event_ record is set to _Success_, you cannot edit the _Event_ record or its relationships to other records and child records.
